It is unquestionably time for Australian governments to address the costly social and economic consequences of terminating care at 18 years. Every year an estimated 3,000 young people leave state care across Australia. Many of these young people experience poor life outcomes: 50% will end up either homeless, in jail or a new parent within the first 12 months of leaving state care. The Home Stretch Symposium will bring together policy developers, stakeholders and implementers to explore and discuss the challenges and complexities associated with introducing the policy of extending care to 21 years. These discussions will be informed by international and national experts in this policy area.

Home Stretch Symposium in Sydney on 27 and 28 August http://thehomestretch.org.au/symposium/

As part of the program we are keen to include the views of foster and kinship carers. At the suggestion of the Symposium Planning Group we have developed a survey for foster and kinship carers. The survey will give the views of a cross section of foster and kinship carers from all Australian states and territories.

The success of this survey depends on it getting to as many foster and kinship carers as possible. Would you please circulate the survey to your carers https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/foster_and_kinship_carers

We need responses by 31 July to allow time for analysis.  After completing the survey carers can go into the draw for one of three $100 vouchers.

In January 2004, the Crime and Misconduct Commission report “Protecting Children: An inquiry into Abuse of Children in Foster Care" recommended that structured exit interviews with carers be conducted.

QFKC has been authorised to conduct these interviews. It is believed that the collection of this information will lead to changes that will improve the Foster Care system.

All personal information provided will remain confidential. Information will be aggregated and will not be published in any way that might enable identification of individuals.
